I have been lost for some time. I’ve been offlin

I have been lost for some time. I’ve been offline to handle some inter-personal physical, mental, and spiritual battles while understanding the brutal system that continues to expect more from me when I’ve felt so lost.

Physical: I’ve noticed how much lack of sleep, not taking naps, or even closing my eyes for 15 minutes has effected my bodily response in inflammation. I am committed to promising myself to enjoy my cooked meals without any media consumption, short walks around my neighborhood, and promising myself to sleep more. It’s honestly a habit that I am bringing back into life.

Mental: Before I was on social media, my mental health was way better than it was. Don’t get me wrong I’m thankful to be on here but the amount of disruptions that I have allowed to get me has caused a chronic depletion in my ability to perform, think, and even the idea to create. My content is for me, those who want to learn, and I cannot expect myself to please everyone.

Spiritual: I’ve often felt that spiritual-based movements are essential in climate world. While I don’t prescribe to a certain religion, I’ve always believed in a higher power level of love and structure that keeps us grounded with our ancestors.

Anywho, with that being said. I’ve been feeling so happy lately redirecting my energy to focus more on local small projects, continue educating on here, and providing the grace I deserve. Love you all 🌈 🍄📕

The climate crisis is not an accident.

Is it a privilege to talk about eco-anxiety in academia or institutions when most first-generation BIPOC college students come from poverty? The first thing that many first-generation students worry about is whether they will survive and how they will support their families, and economic security comes first. Even when faced with climate change changes as I was growing up, the main priority that was focused on was getting a degree to build generational wealth. Hardly I thought about eco-anxiety because I was already traumatized in different areas of my life.

When I first heard about eco-anxiety, it was presented by dominant environmentalists that did not look like me nor came from the background as me. I dismissed that feeling because I had already internalized all the systems of oppression that were causing my stress for survival off the roof. I believe eco-anxiety is nuanced and many BIPOC do feel it, but at the same time, I don’t think it’s prioritized as the number #1 cause of pain when they are struggling in a housing, food, energy, and medical crisis. Yes, these issues are interconnected, but for some people, the climate is not the first thing they think about, and I relate to that sentiment because when I was trying to survive, it was about what I could currently do in my life, which was to graduate.

Are intergenerational dialogues critical in the climate movement?

Am I mad at older generations for not doing enough? This statement has been let go through my work because I’ve had to acknowledge that my parents, who were forcibly displaced from their native countries, were not the ones accelerating the climate crisis. Our parents did not contribute to the climate crisis. Yes, they grew up when the environment was worsening, but they had little to say about environmental policy. My parents were trying to survive.

In my latest independent series #TeachingClimateTogether , I could interview Dr. Elin Kelsey (@elin.kelsey) on her thoughts about older generations who need to continue pushing conversations around climate action while also building together with young people. Having older friends in the climate movement has helped me navigate my career because we become more disconnected in our work without talking to someone about their experiences. Building an intergenerational movement means sitting down with those to share your life stories, enjoying the joy that brings you together, and, most importantly, having fun with what you are doing.

Tag your hope-keeper in the climate movement. We need more hope-keepers in the climate justice movement. More people who hold evidence-based hope in their hands that celebrate the continued momentum and progress that is being done. Because without them, who would we lean on in times of despair? My mentor @elin.kelsey taught me that and we actually produced a video around this conversation ♥️🍄🌎

I’ve always seen myself in activism as the one who has held space for those who have been severely burnt out from doing physical and digital activism simultaneously. I’ve always hated leading or being told to facilitate, because I doubted my ability to hold hope on all sides during disagreements. But I’ve found that disagreeing is healthy and one thing that people can relate to is hope, even if we don’t see it or think that we have it left in our hearts, that is a powerful storytelling that we all have. There is much more worth fighting for in a land that was meant to love.

I spent a majority of my time lost about Ecocide. In college when I took wildlife ecology courses, we talked about biodiversity loss. Many ecologists told me they didn’t know the long impacts and how many species we have lost overtime. In California, we are a Mediterranean climate, and are a hotspot for some of the most rich species.

In my #TeachingClimateTogether series, Dr. Elin Kelsey @elin.kelsey talks about how it’s so easy for us to accept that hope is lost than actually looking into how local issues have local solutions. In fact, even myself, I was challenged to redesign the frame work of everything is dying to, everything is trying to regenerate.
