There's so much pain in the world. I'm trying to k There's so much pain in the world. I'm trying to keep my head up and focus on my community and what's in my control ... but that doesn't mean the pain disappears. More than ever before, resistance in movements have always existed to create a just world. From what has happened in the flooding of Pakistan, cruel human rights abuses in Iran, and the continued developed injustices that are unfolding is a lot for us to take within our hearts. But that doesn’t mean we should be silent about these injustices as they relate to our lives, there is no such thing as being separated by borders, our cultures are tied within each other’s liberation. The phrase, “save the world” in media and television has become apolitical. This is because there is no further role of acknowledgement of intersectionality or how injustices unfold. Building reverence and sovereignty means to challenge the power dynamics we hold and also further recognize that collective movements are powerful together. #queerbrownvegan
Wildfires continue to be a favorite for mainstream Wildfires continue to be a favorite for mainstream media to report on, but while they cover the blazes and the damages, that’s usually it. What happens after the smoke clears? Most people feel very viscerally toward wildfires and it’s a stark reminder that the impacts of climate breakdown are worsening, but telling the whole picture means talking about how populations vulnerable to wildfires are lessening the impact and saving lives. Indigenous communities understand fire in a deeper and proactive way compared to the Western reactive response, and although the fires we see today are exacerbated by fossil fuel emissions and droughts, their mitigation work has helped prevent disaster. The Westbank First Nation had hand-treated the local forest and when an inferno blazed through Mount Law in British Columbia for 19 days, there was significant damage to only one building. Research has shown that collaborating with local communities provides some of the most effective wildfire management and mitigation. That’s why the USFS has copied this community-led approach and helped cities in states like Oregon to develop their own plans. When we zoom in and focus on what makes communities unique, we get one-of-a-kind solutions like the targeted grazing happening in Garonia of Northern Spain, where goats getting their daily meal play an active role in preventing the spread of wildfires. These examples highlight just a small fraction of the work already happening. For communities vulnerable to wildfires, they aren’t rolling over and giving up but the opposite. AI,  big data and biometrics are emerging technol AI,  big data and biometrics are emerging technologies that will substantially shape the future of border policing. The Latinx and Chicanx organizers at Mijente (@conmijente )have been calling out this violent use of technology and the willing participation of companies like Amazon Web Services, Palantir, Microsoft, and many others to sell their data to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’ - known as ICE. Mijente has uncovered ample evidence of wildly lucrative contracts, invasive technologies at the local, federal, and international levels, and a revolving door of tech executives and government officials driving and making profits off of human rights abuses and widespread trauma and suffering. Ever since the inception of the agency in 2002, ICE has had information technology (IT) contracts with large defense contractors and IT services companies. But with the Trump administration, came unprecedented levels of surveillance, detention and deportation, which heightened the importance of new technologies and companies. ICE has spent more than $1.3 BILLION of our money on geolocation technology alone, and according to Georgetown Unversity researchers. “pull detailed dossiers on nearly anyone, seemingly at any time”. How often do you hear about climate solutions? T How often do you hear about climate solutions? The reality is that much of our media and education is problems-oriented rather than solutions-oriented, and it influences the way that we see climate change. It also influences the role that we see ourselves playing in solving it. Environmental Scholar and Author, Elin Kelsey, believes that highlighting solutions and rooting our hope in the evidence of what’s working is a necessary shift that our institutions, educators, and communicators must adopt. Increasingly, young people are feeling fatalistic about the state of the future and in my past posts, we’ve also discussed that doomism helps no one except for those who profit from it. However, in order to help increase engagement in climate issues, we must consciously alter the ways we communicate it. This doesn’t mean to ignore the problems, but rather, to practice seeing on two levels: the problems, and the solutions, simultaneously. It’s okay to experience anxiety and fear as a result of climate change, it’s even healthy and to be expected. What is and will always be important is how we respond to it. What does hope mean to you? Do you often feel anxious about climate change? I Do you often feel anxious about climate change? I encourage conversations about mental health in this space because there is much fear, anxiety, and uncertainty around climate change and I feel it too. These emotions are a real and valid response to the challenges we face and they’re exacerbated by climate reporting. Most people think revolutions in journalism look like shifting from print to digital, but the truth is that it’s constantly advancing and adapting in more nuanced ways. In response to the rise of climate doomism, one such advance has been found in solutions journalism: a journalistic approach that involves seeking out and covering solutions simultaneously to covering problems. The majority of current climate reporting has an adverse effect, potentially even leading to secondary traumatic stress and anxiety, and in order to address it, we must be vigilant in demanding to hear about solutions. In many places, not just frontline communities, there are people who have found meaning in addressing and solving these issues, there are communities and cultures of care, and there are innovative solutions being developed constantly. In this 5 post series, we’ll dive into what terms like solutions journalism and evidence-based hope mean, as well as explore examples and case studies for issues like wildfires and heatwaves. This week I spoke at the @jacksonwildorg in Vienna This week I spoke at the @jacksonwildorg in Vienna, Austria 🇦🇹 and learned about the conservation wildlife documentary space. As someone who has recently began the process to create a documentary through the producer side of things, I have been engaging with several creatives to learn about their processes and structures. The truth is that wildlife conservation documentary spaces have been historically misrepresented and created by people in the Global North. It’s true that we need to invest more money to creatives in the Global South and to further provided resources to those who have not been able to share their story. As many of you know, back when I studied environmental science, I was studying lizards and evolution in a wildlife ecology lab. I was immediately turned off by the lack of diversity and anti racism. But to be able to be back in a conservation field, I was happy. There are Queer / Trans wildlife documakers. There are so many talented Black, Indigenous, and People of Color in this space that have and will continue to add vibrancy to this industry. Impact film making and strategies was a big theme and it was a huge privilege to be in this space to help facilitate conversations and speak about my experiences. Last year, the world’s 60 biggest banks loaned or invested more than $740 billion in companies that produce fossil fuels like oil, coal and gas. Fossil fuels are the main drivers of climate change, and scientists and energy experts say we need to stop investing in new oil, coal and gas projects if we want to get a handle on global warming.  Banks like JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America and RBC are promising to help the world move to a clean economy by investing in things like renewable energy. Last year, they joined a group of financial institutions around the world that promise to reach net zero by 2050, which means they plan to cancel out any greenhouse gas pollution they create. But that hasn’t stopped banks from giving billions of dollars to oil and gas companies at the same time. JPMorgan Chase gave almost $16 billion to new fossil fuel projects just last year. Bank of America gave $8 billion and RBC, the biggest bank in Canada, gave more than $7.5 billion. These banks say they’re making changes to be more climate-friendly, but some people aren’t waiting around. Instead, they’re switching to credit unions or other banks that don’t lend or invest money in fossil fuels. Depending on where you live and what kind of savings you have, this can be a really simple or complicated process. If you’re interested in making the switch, you can start by asking your bank whether they invest in or loan money to fossil fuel companies. Why is climate justice migrant justice?  Climate Why is climate justice migrant justice?  Climate change is often referred to as a threat multiplier: It intersects with other forces, vulnerabilities, and inequities and makes them worse. When you think about it - this actually elevates the importance of building alliances and mutual commitments across movements. The ideal and effective response to these compounding factors needs the engagement and alignment of multiple movements, including climate and environmental justice; immigrant and Indigenous justice; racial, LGBTQ+ and gender justice and economic justice. Border violence profiteering is climate change profiteering. PERIOD. The latest IPCC reports are clear - the climate crisis does not care about lines drawn on maps. Creating safe pathways for people to move and live in dignity is essential. You know how, in the environmental movement, we reject the idea of sacrifice zones from environmental destruction? That is so important.  Climate injustice is migration injustice - it’s the border and surveillance industry pushing attacks on people on the move instead of climate action. And so migrant justice - standing with those on the frontline of the emergency - is climate justice.  Humans have moved for tens of thousands of years, for every reason imaginable. That is not new. Migration has been caused and complicated by war, enslavement and persecution. Today, migrants and refugees must not be stigmatized - if anything needs to be stigmatized it is corporate profiteering from refugee and migration abuse. My very first time was visiting Yosemite Park back when I was 18 years old, I had never visited a national park. NEEF’s National Public Lands Day (NPLD) is the nation’s largest single-day volunteer event for public lands. Established in 1994 and held annually on the fourth Saturday in September, this celebration brings out thousands of volunteers to help restore and improve public lands around the country. NPLD is also a “Fee-Free Day”—one of only five days a year when entrance fees are waived at national parks and other public lands. “In the climate justice movement, we say that tr “In the climate justice movement, we say that transition is inevitable, but justice is not. We also believe that a just transition is not aspirational but that it’s operational” - Elizabeth Yeampierre, Executive Director of UPROSE Brooklyn (@uprosebrooklyn ), Climate Justice Leader. When @grounded invited me to the Clean Energy Freedom forum to learn about the future of clean energy, I was delighted to take a trip to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to see the discussions around energy justice. The U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm (@energy) started by listing how clean energy will unfold in the future of America. We must add around two thousand gigawatts of clean electricity to our electric grid by 2035 if we want to achieve 100% clean energy. To do this, the DOE will engage in multiple programs and initiatives to get people transitioning to the green job sector and work alongside environmental justice organizations to ensure a just transition. When the Ukrainian Energy Minister spoke about the current energy crisis due to the war, my heart sank. Around 7 million Ukrainians were cut off from energy and electricity supply. For almost seven months of the war, Russia has destroyed and occupied: 90% of wind generation, 30% of solar generation, and 30% of thermal energy. Understanding that energy security is safe and protected throughout the war is essential for the people of Ukraine. The impacts of fossil fuels and climate change on U.S. National security in 10-30 years will cause the following: 1.) Domestic and global food systems collapse 2.) Rise in civil unrest, armed conflicts 3.) Damage to infrastructure 4.) State Failure Ending extractive systems and advocating for a clean energy transition is a must. “People love the idea of you, but don’t actual “People love the idea of you, but don’t actually know who you are”. I remember hearing this both powerful and truthful statement when I was younger trying to build my career. I’ve always felt that the realms of social media has opened me to pit of both beauty and also isolationism. I’ve always been a storyteller, one that has always sat down to listen 👂 and write. I’m not an illusion myself but I recognized how much people have perceived to love the brand of me but not accept me for who I am as an individual. My feelings and emotions have always been complexed. I have struggled for months to give myself grace when I’m not able to show up for everyone. I have been fighting to strive away from isolationism and recognize that it is only harder when the same spaces that are designed as safe spaces seems like an internal hierarchy of how to one up each other. How can I center love for one another without the ego, career, or status. These thoughts are constantly invading my brain that I just sometimes feel like I’m becoming more unknown and yet being idealized. To those who struggle with the constant wrath of insecurities, traumas, and self doubt — you are more than enough to understand you and love the person you are becoming. The truth is that the current system we live in today has made it tricky to understand how do we save our money and invest when the same companies we invest in for our future stability are exploitative? There was a article I read recently about GEN Z needing atleast 3 million dollars to properly retire in the future. Investors are using their money to fuel the climat Investors are using their money to fuel the climate crisis, and profiting from it too. And we have the receipts! Number 1: this industry’s investors play a pivotal role in the climate crisis by financing fossil fuels and agribusiness. The world’s biggest asset managers – BlackRock, Vanguard, and State Street – are financing the climate crisis through investments in fossil fuel and agribusiness companies, driving increased carbon emissions, human rights abuses, and forced displacement. That leads us to number 2: That global instability from the climate emergency leads to the second way those investors make money - the Border and Surveillance industry. BlackRock, Vanguard, and State Street also investing in border and surveillence companies which profit from racist and xenophobic responses to migration. Those same asset management companies hold around 32% of shares in CoreCivic and 38% of shares in GEO Group – those are companies that operate private prisons and migrant detention centers linked to widespread human rights abuses. How do you preserve your clothing? According to a How do you preserve your clothing? According to a recent article from EcoAge, the average lifetime for a clothing garment lasts an estimated 2.2 years; and thousands of clothing end up in landfill each year. Being able to take of your clothes is something that is typically not taught in school these days. Growing up, my parents knew how to sew, mend, and repair clothing. They also knew what materials worked best for longevity. I've teamed up with @dropps to teach you all how to take care of your clothing! Here are a few tips that you may consider. 1.) Washing less can have a better outcome in protecting your clothing. For example, if the clothing is not dirty, a quick air dry or steam in the shower can help freshen up the clothing. 2.) Washing at low temperatures can help reduce the breakage of clothing. Using natural detergent like Dropps and washing at low can help with this! For an average shirt over a year, 80% of the emissions produced during the ‘in-use’ stage of its life cycle are from washing and tumble drying – washing at 30° or less helps to reduce those emissions while also protecting your clothes. 3.) Look at the care labels on your clothing. For those who have materials such as wool, silk, or cashmere, it is important that you read the directions to avoid shrinkage. Using dry cleaners is important, but ensuring they don't use toxic chemicals is essential. 4.) Air drying your clothing! There’s nothing like that freshly laundered, the air-dried smell when you get your clean clothes in from the washing line. And not only does it smell great, but air drying is also better for your clothes and the planet compared to tumble drying, which uses a lot of energy to run and can also damage certain fibers. 5.) Storing your clothes away from harsh, direct sunlight. When preserving clothing, it is important that they are kept in cool temperatures. Prevent dirt from building as it can attract moths! Last year, I was going through some rough times an Last year, I was going through some rough times and didn’t enjoy Climate Week NYC. This year it’s been better! How has Climate Week NYC been treating me? The truth is my mind is overstimulated and I can’t process the amount of events that are happening across NYC. Although so many of my good friends are visiting across different states and countries, they remind me that community building is more essential than ever before. It breaks my heart to see that these events should have been happening years ago and not just in popular states, it should also be everywhere! It honestly takes so much of my social energy to prepare myself for the day that I planned to leave to Pennsylvania to get away from the events and focus on more smaller scale events. My impact in the work doesn’t mean I have to be at every event, or have to be speaking at every event, but to just want to continue to listen and learn from both older and younger activists in the space. As people are preparing and mobilize for COP27 I have often been asked if I’m going but the truth is that I have no badge or funding to go. But, I also think about what are ways in which I can support those who do endeavors to Egypt from the states.
